Control of Paces (COP) Phase

Technical Details for Ridden TREC Competitions

The Control of Paces (COP) phase is designed to demonstrate a rider’s ability to influence the horse’s gait while maintaining a clear direction. Internationally, this phase is known as Maîtrise des Allures (MA).

Course: 2-meter wide, flat corridor
Scoring: 0 to 60
Distance: 150 meters at canter, 150 meters at walk
Time: See chart below

Format

The Control of Paces phase is a timed exercise ridden along a 150 X 2 meter marked corridor that may be straight or gently curved. There are 1-2 timekeepers depending on the method used and 5 judges spread out along the corridor spotting for a break in gait.

Objectives

1) To canter the corridor as SLOW as possible without breaking gait or stepping outside of the corridor.
2) To walk the corridor as FAST as possible without breaking gait or stepping outside of the corridor.

Levels

The Control of Paces / Mastery of Gaits is the same for all Levels.

Scoring

Up to 30 points can be earned during each phase for a total of 60 points.
This is a timed event. The times are converted into points and added to the score. See chart below.
Stepping outside corridor or breaking gait earns a score of 0 for that section of the phase.
